Before the Sun Glares

Front porch, early afternoon

A bee hard at work in a bed of white flowers with yellow centers. A green hedge looks on. Photo by the author.

I am sitting on the porch. It is early afternoon so the sun is bearable for a while longer. The baby peeks through the curtains from time to time. She grins, pulling the gap wider.

Part of me feels bad, sitting out there when she is in the there. The whole afternoon and evening lie ahead, though, and I need a moment (or an hour) to myself.
